Lake Charlevoix, a large inland lake in northern Michigan, experiences a wide range of water temperatures through the year. In spring (March–May) surface temperatures commonly run from roughly 35–60°F (2–16°C) as the lake thaws and warms unevenly. By summer (June–August) the surface typically reaches about 65–75°F (18–24°C) in most shallow and sheltered areas, though deeper spots and open-water locations can remain cooler. During autumn (September–November) temperatures decline to roughly 45–65°F (7–18°C) as air temperatures fall, and in winter (December–February) the lake surface often approaches freezing near 32°F (0°C) and can ice over in colder winters.
Swimming is permitted and popular in the warmer months when surface temperatures are comfortable; public beaches and private waterfronts receive swimmers from late June through August. Early- and late-season swimming is possible but often brisk due to cooler water and may pose hypothermia risks. Winter swimming is generally unsafe because of ice cover and very cold water. Conditions such as boat traffic, sudden drop-offs, wind-driven waves, and occasional algae or water-quality advisories mean swimmers should use designated swimming areas, heed local warnings, and take standard safety precautions.
