Location & Local Information
Pehčevo is a town located in the extreme eastern part of North Macedonia, situated close to the very source of the Bregalnica River, high up in the Maleshevski Mountains. Due to this high elevation and the river's pristine mountain origins, the water of the Bregalnica near Pehčevo is consistently very cold throughout the year. In the winter, temperatures are near freezing, typically ranging from 1∘C to 4∘C. Even during the hottest summer months, the water temperature rarely exceeds a chilly 15∘C to 18∘C due to the constant, rapid flow of cold spring and snowmelt water.
Swimming in the Bregalnica River near Pehčevo is not an officially designated or recommended activity. The extremely low water temperature, which poses a significant and rapid risk of hypothermia, is the principal reason swimming is generally discouraged. Furthermore, the river in this area is characterized by fast currents and a rocky riverbed, typical of an upper-course mountain river, which creates safety hazards. As such, the river is valued primarily for its natural beauty, pristine quality, and hydropower potential, but not for public bathing.
