** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Dupnitsa sits in southwestern Bulgaria in the Struma river valley beneath the Rila foothills, so the local freshwater environment is a mix of lowland river stretches, small reservoirs and cold mountain streams. Seasonal surface temperatures vary widely: in winter many streams and smaller lakes hover around 0–4 °C (32–39 °F) and can partially freeze; spring sees water warming to roughly 4–12 °C (39–54 °F) as snowmelt and rains keep flows cool; peak summer temperatures in sheltered lowland ponds, slow river pools and some reservoirs commonly reach about 18–26 °C (64–79 °F), while higher-elevation mountain lakes and torrent streams remain much cooler, typically 8–16 °C (46–61 °F). Autumn cooling follows a reverse pattern, dropping back toward single digits by late season.
Recreational swimming is possible in and around Dupnitsa in summer where access is safe and water quality permits, but most spots are informal rather than lifeguarded beaches. Local regulations may restrict bathing in certain reservoirs used for water supply, and visibility, currents and sudden depth changes on the Struma and its tributaries present hazards. Cold mountain waters carry a real risk of cold shock even in warm months. Swimmers should choose slow, shallow areas, check for posted rules or local advice, and avoid swimming alone or after heavy rains when water quality and flow can deteriorate.
