Umeå, the regional centre in Västerbotten County, sits close to several lakes and the Gulf of Bothnia, which shape local recreational habits. Lake water temperatures vary strongly with the seasons: during late spring (April–May) surface temperatures commonly range from about 0–8 °C (32–46 °F) as ice melts and the water stratifies. In the main summer months (June–August) lakes typically warm to roughly 12–22 °C (54–72 °F), with sheltered, shallow bays reaching the upper end in warm summers. Early autumn (September–October) sees cooling to around 6–14 °C (43–57 °F), and through winter many lakes freeze or sit at about 0 °C (32 °F) under ice cover.
Swimming is generally allowed when lakes are ice-free and when local bathing sites are open; municipal beaches and natural bathing spots are used by residents and visitors during the warmer months.
