** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Umeälven, the Ume River in Västerbotten County, typically runs cold for much of the year because it is a northerly, snow‑fed and partly regulated river. Seasonal surface temperatures commonly range from about 0–6 °C (32–43 °F) in spring during snowmelt, rise to roughly 12–20 °C (54–68 °F) in summer with sheltered shallow bays occasionally reaching around 22 °C (72 °F) in heat spells, cool to approximately 6–12 °C (43–54 °F) in autumn, and drop again toward 0–2 °C (32–36 °F) in winter when ice forms on many stretches. Temperature can vary locally with depth, current and proximity to dam outflows; water released from reservoirs is often colder than surface temperatures downstream.
Swimming in Umeälven is not generally prohibited, and people do bathe in appropriate locations during the warmer months, but it carries notable risks. Strong currents, sudden depth changes, cold shock from low temperatures, and variable flows caused by hydropower releases make many stretches unsafe for casual swimming; ice cover in winter precludes normal bathing. Local beaches or designated spots in and near towns are safer options, and regional authorities or municipalities may post advisories or restrictions. For safe swimming, heed local information, avoid areas near turbines and outflows, and use flotation aids if necessary.
