The Ionian Sea, bordered by southern Italy, western Greece and Albania, shows typical Mediterranean seasonal water temperature patterns. Winter sea surface temperatures usually range from about 13°C to 16°C along most coastal areas, with colder pockets in deeper or more northerly locations. Spring brings a steady rise, commonly 15°C to 21°C as shallow bays and coastal shelves warm first. Peak temperatures occur in summer, often between 22°C and 28°C, with the warmest values in July and August in sheltered gulfs and around southern islands. In autumn the sea cools again to roughly 19°C to 24°C, with surface temperatures dropping faster after the first strong winds and rains. Local factors such as depth, coastal exposure, river inflows and local weather can shift these ranges by a few degrees, and shallow, sun-exposed coves tend to be warmer than open channels.
Swimming Conditions
Swimming in the Ionian Sea is widely permitted and popular for most of the year because of generally good water quality, accessible shores and a long summer season of warm water. Recreational bathing is most comfortable from late spring through early autumn when temperatures exceed about 20°C; the warmest summer months are ideal for extended swimming without thermal protection. In cooler months, swimming is still possible but water near 13°C–16°C is brisk and usually requires a wetsuit for prolonged activity. Safety considerations include local currents, occasional strong winds, boat traffic and seasonal jellyfish appearances, so swimmers should heed local advice and lifeguard signage. Coastal resorts and beaches commonly provide facilities and seasonal supervision during the main swimming months.
