The Sea of Crete, the southern arm of the Aegean Sea bordering the island of Crete, shows noticeable seasonal variation in water temperature. During winter months (December–February) surface temperatures typically sit between 15 °C and 18 °C. In spring (March–May) the sea gradually warms, ranging roughly from 16 °C to 21 °C as daylight and air temperatures increase. Summer (June–August) brings the warmest conditions, with surface waters commonly between 22 °C and 26 °C, and localized pockets of up to about 27 °C on calm, shallow coasts in August. Autumn (September–November) sees a gradual cooling, usually yielding temperatures in the vicinity of 21 °C to 24 °C before winter sets in.
Swimming Conditions
Swimming in the Sea of Crete is widely permitted and very popular, especially from late spring through early autumn when temperatures are most comfortable for bathing. During peak summer months water is warm enough for prolonged, unsuited swimming for most people, while shoulder seasons may still be agreeable for those who acclimatize or prefer shorter dips. In winter the cooler surface temperatures make casual swimming less comfortable without thermal protection such as a wetsuit, though some swimmers and water-sport enthusiasts continue year-round activities. Practical considerations include local weather, wind, sea state and currents, which can affect safety and perceived temperature at any given time, so swimmers should heed local advice, lifeguard guidance where available, and seasonal warnings before entering the water.
