The Tyrrhenian Sea is part of the Mediterranean Sea off the western coast of Italy, between the Apennine Peninsula and the islands of Sicily, Sardinia, Corsica and Elba.

The Tyrrhenian Sea reaches its maximum depth in its central part - 3720 meters. There is a chain of seamount peaks in the sea. They formed at the junction of the seismic plates of Europe and Asia, just like the Vesuvius and Stromboli volcanoes.

Several straits link the Tyrrhenian Sea with the rest of the Mediterranean. Among them are the northern Corsican Strait, located between the shores of Italy and Corsica, the western Bonifacio Strait, separating Corsica and Sardinia by eleven kilometers of sea waters, the southern Strait of Sardin, as well as the Sicilian and Messinian straits.
