The Tyrrhenian Sea, off Italy’s western coast between the mainland, Corsica and Sardinia, shows a clear seasonal cycle in surface water temperature. In winter (December–February) typical temperatures range from about 12 °C to 15 °C along most coastal areas, rising in spring (March–May) to roughly 14 °C–20 °C. Summer (June–August) brings the warmest waters, generally between 20 °C and 26 °C, with shallow, sheltered bays and southern exposures occasionally reaching toward 26 °C–28 °C on calm, sunny stretches. In autumn (September–November) the sea cools again, usually ranging from about 18 °C to 22 °C as the season progresses. Local factors such as depth, coastal configuration and prevailing winds can shift these values by a few degrees between nearby beaches.
Swimming Conditions
Swimming in the Tyrrhenian Sea is commonly practiced and effectively permitted year-round, with the most comfortable and popular period in summer when surface temperatures are warm enough for extended bathing without thermal protection. Spring and autumn are also suitable for many swimmers, though water at the lower end of those ranges can feel brisk and may require shorter sessions or a wetsuit for those sensitive to cold. Winter swimming is possible but limited by colder temperatures, and prolonged immersion at 12–15 °C carries risk of rapid cooling. As always, local conditions—weather, currents, water quality and presence of lifeguards—should be checked before entering the water.
