The Thracian Sea, the northernmost part of the Aegean Sea off the coast of Thrace, exhibits a clear seasonal cycle in surface water temperature. During winter months surface temperatures commonly fall to around 8–12 °C, with the coldest readings typically in January and February. In spring the sea gradually warms, usually ranging between 11–18 °C as air temperatures rise and daylight increases. By summer, from June through August, surface temperatures are at their warmest and generally fall in the 22–26 °C band, occasionally reaching slightly higher during heat waves. Autumn sees a cooling trend, with sea temperatures typically between 16–22 °C as the region moves toward the colder season. Local variations occur close to shore, in shallow bays and estuaries, where temperatures can be a few degrees different from open-water values.
Swimming Conditions
Swimming in the Thracian Sea is widely practiced and generally allowed year-round from a legal and access standpoint, though comfort and safety vary with the season. Most recreational swimming takes place in late spring, summer and early autumn when water temperatures around 20–26 °C are comfortable for prolonged bathing. Winter swimming is possible but discouraged for casual beachgoers because water near 8–12 °C significantly increases the risk of cold shock and hypothermia; it is typically attempted only by acclimatized swimmers or as organized cold-water swimming events with safety measures. Weather, wind, currents and local regulations can also affect conditions, so swimmers are advised to check local guidance and exercise appropriate caution.
