The Šventoji River in Lithuania experiences marked seasonal variation in water temperature. In winter the river commonly approaches freezing, about 0–4 °C (32–39 °F), and in cold spells surface ice can form. During spring and early summer temperatures generally rise into the range of 3–12 °C (37–54 °F) as snowmelt and rains feed the flow. In summer, when air temperatures are warm and flows are lower, many shallow stretches warm to roughly 16–24 °C (61–75 °F), with the warmest, sun‑exposed pools occasionally reaching the upper end of that band. In autumn the river cools again to roughly 6–12 °C (43–54 °F) as nights lengthen and precipitation patterns change.
Swimming in the Šventoji is permitted in most places, but opportunities vary by season and location. The summer months provide the most comfortable conditions for bathing, especially near the river mouth and sluggish stretches where temperatures are highest. Inland and faster sections may be cooler and present stronger currents, submerged vegetation and uneven bottoms, so they are less suitable for casual swimming. Water quality can change after heavy rains, and there are few permanent lifeguards on the river itself, so swimmers are advised to use designated bathing areas where available, heed local signage and exercise caution; winter ice swimming is practiced by some but requires experience and safety measures.
