*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Bury, a town in Greater Manchester, lies along the upper reaches of the River Irwell, where the river flows through wooded valleys and open countryside before winding toward Manchester. The Irwell’s temperature here is shaped by upland streams and the region’s cool, maritime climate. In winter, the water usually ranges from 4 to 6°C (39–43°F), staying cold and fast-moving. By spring, it warms gradually to around 8–10°C (46–50°F). During midsummer—especially in July and August—the temperature can reach 16–18°C (61–64°F) in calm, sunny areas, while shaded sections remain a few degrees cooler. As autumn arrives, the water cools again to about 10–12°C (50–54°F), keeping a refreshing character throughout most of the year.
Swimming in the River Irwell near Bury is possible, and wild swimmers occasionally use quieter sections of the river, particularly during summer. The water quality has improved significantly in recent decades, though caution is still necessary due to variable flow and occasional urban runoff. For most visitors, riverside paths and nearby parks offer safer ways to enjoy the scenery. The area features attractions such as Burrs Country Park, which provides both access to the river and outdoor activities, along with the heritage East Lancashire Railway that passes through the scenic Irwell Valley.
