** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

The Rio Arade, in Portugal’s Faro District and commonly called Rio Arade, is a tidal river whose water temperature depends on location, season and tide. In the lower estuary near Portimão the water tends to be milder and more influenced by the Atlantic, typically ranging in winter (December–February) from about 14–18 °C (57–64 °F) and in summer (June–August) from about 20–24 °C (68–75 °F). Upstream, in more sheltered freshwater stretches and reservoirs, temperatures are usually cooler in winter — roughly 10–14 °C (50–57 °F) — and can warm in summer to 18–24 °C (64–75 °F), with shallow, sunlit spots reaching the higher end of these ranges.
Swimming in the Rio Arade is possible but conditional. There are no universal bans, yet safety and water quality vary: the estuary sees boat traffic, changing currents and occasional pollution after heavy rain, while upstream pools may be calmer but less monitored. Local municipalities post bathing advisories and designated spots; many people swim in sheltered coves or at nearby coastal beaches where monitoring is regular. Visitors should check local signage, recent water-quality information and be mindful of tides, currents and boat lanes before entering the water.
