*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
The Gilão River (Rio Gilão) in the Faro District is an estuarine waterway whose temperature is strongly influenced by tidal exchange with the nearby Atlantic and by shallow, sun-warmed channels. Typical seasonal surface temperatures are approximately 12–16 °C (54–61 °F) in winter, 14–20 °C (57–68 °F) in spring, 18–24 °C (64–75 °F) in summer, and 16–22 °C (61–72 °F) in autumn. Local conditions can push values a few degrees higher in shallow, sheltered arms on hot days or lower after cold spells and heavy rainfall, and salt content varies with the tide, affecting how the water feels to swimmers.
Swimming in the Rio Gilão is commonly practiced in summer, especially in calmer, shallower sections and at nearby river beaches, but it is not uniformly regulated as a public bathing area along its entire length. Permission is generally implicit in public access, yet safety and suitability depend on water quality monitoring, tidal currents, boat traffic, underwater hazards and occasional urban runoff. Lifeguards are not present at all sites, so checking local signage and recent water-quality reports before entering is advisable. In short, swimming is possible and often pleasant in warmer months, but caution and local information are important for safety and health.
