*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

The Mira River (Rio Mira), flowing through the Beja District toward the Atlantic at Vila Nova de Milfontes, has water temperatures that reflect its Mediterranean climate and Atlantic influence. In winter months temperatures commonly sit around 12–14 °C (54–57 °F), rising in spring to roughly 14–18 °C (57–64 °F). During summer, surface and shallow pool temperatures often warm to about 18–24 °C (64–75 °F), while autumn typically brings a gradual cooling to approximately 14–20 °C (57–68 °F). Local conditions such as recent rainfall, depth, shade from vegetation and tidal influence near the mouth can shift these values by a few degrees.
Swimming in the Rio Mira is widely practiced and generally allowed in many public river beaches, natural pools and the calmer downstream reaches near the mouth, where accessibility and milder currents make bathing popular. However, permissions and safety depend on location: some stretches cross private land or protected habitats and may be restricted, and high flows after storms, underwater hazards, strong currents in narrow channels and occasional water-quality issues can make swimming unsafe. Visitors are advised to follow local signage, choose recognized bathing spots, and consider seasonal flow and temperature when planning a swim.
