Water Temperature: Daily Trends, Historical Records, and Forecast
❌ As of today, the minimum water temperature ranges from 47°F (8°C) to 50°F (10°C). This is still cool water, suitable only for experienced swimmers or those accustomed to cold water. Swimming in such conditions is possible, but not recommended for prolonged periods. Extra caution should be taken during extended exposure, as the cold water can cause heat loss and lead to hypothermia. For added comfort, special clothing can be used. It is important to note that these swimming tips and recommendations apply only in good weather. When the air temperature is below 68°F (20°C), and sometimes even below 77°F (25°C), swimming can be unpleasant even with relatively high water temperatures.

** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
The lake Votna in Vestland County, Norway is a typical coastal–mountain lake whose water temperatures reflect both maritime influence and cool mountain runoff. Seasonal surface temperatures in summer commonly range from about 10–18 °C (50–64 °F), and on warm, sheltered days shallow areas can rise toward 20–22 °C (68–72 °F). In spring and autumn the water is noticeably cooler, often between roughly 2–10 °C (36–50 °F) as snowmelt and rain keep temperatures down. During winter the surface approaches freezing, about 0 °C (32 °F), and parts of the lake may ice over in cold years.
Swimming in Votna is generally allowed, consistent with Norway’s public access to outdoor areas, but the conditions make it different from typical warm‑water bathing spots. Cold water poses risks of cold shock and hypothermia, and there are usually no lifeguards, marked beaches or facilities; sudden depth changes, rocky shores and inlet currents can also be hazards. Many people who swim here prefer short dips, wetsuits or supervised group swims, and they check local water‑quality notices and weather forecasts first. In short, recreational swimming is practicable but requires caution because of low temperatures and limited infrastructure.
