Töölö Bay, located in central Helsinki in the Uusimaa region, is a shallow urban lake surrounded by parkland and cultural landmarks. Because of its small size and depth, the water temperature changes quickly with the seasons. After the ice melts in late April, surface temperatures start at around 5–8 °C (41–46 °F). In early summer, the water warms to about 13–17 °C (55–63 °F), and by July, the warmest month, the temperature can reach 18–22 °C (64–72 °F) during sunny periods. However, due to limited water circulation, the temperature can fluctuate rapidly depending on weather. By October, the water cools below 10 °C (50 °F), and the bay typically freezes over in late November.
Swimming in Töölö Bay is not officially allowed, mainly because of water quality concerns and the bay’s urban location. The bay’s shallow and nutrient-rich waters often experience algae growth during the summer, which can reduce clarity and affect hygiene levels. However, the area remains a popular spot for outdoor activities such as walking, rowing, and birdwatching. For swimming, residents usually visit nearby designated beaches such as Hietaranta or Seurasaari, where the water is cleaner and monitored regularly, providing safe and enjoyable conditions for bathing during the warm months.
