Valkjärvi, located in the Uusimaa region near Lohja, is a relatively large lake popular for recreation and features established swimming opportunities. Swimming is freely allowed along the lake’s accessible shoreline and at designated public beaches, a fundamental right enshrined in Finland's Everyman’s Rights. Due to its status as a local water source and recreational spot, the water quality is monitored by local authorities, with recent reports generally indicating clear water and low levels of algae, which helps ensure hygienic and safe conditions for public bathing during the season.
The lake experiences the characteristic seasonal temperature range of Southern Finnish lakes, with a prolonged period of ice cover. During the winter, typically spanning from December to April, the lake freezes over, and water temperatures beneath the ice remain near the maximum density point, generally ranging from 1∘C to 4∘C. In the peak summer month of July, the surface water warms considerably, with nearshore temperatures commonly ranging from 19∘C to 22∘C.
