** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Starvation Reservoir is a high-elevation impoundment, so its waters tend to stay cooler than lower-elevation lakes. Surface temperatures in spring commonly range from about 40–55°F (4–13°C) as snowmelt and inflows keep the reservoir cold. By early summer the surface often warms to roughly 50–65°F (10–18°C), and peak summer surface readings in July and August can reach the mid-60s to mid-70s °F (around 18–24°C) on warm years. In autumn the surface typically falls back into the 50s °F (10–16°C) as air temperatures drop, and winter brings near-freezing conditions and ice in many years, with water at or just above 32–40°F (0–4°C) under the ice. Deeper water remains substantially colder year-round because the reservoir stratifies and inflowing rivers and springs introduce chilly currents.
Swimming is allowed at Starvation Reservoir as part of its general recreational use, but it is largely an unsupervised setting, so visitors should treat it as swim-at-your-own-risk. The combination of cool water temperatures, sudden thermoclines and drop-offs, recreational boat traffic, and the absence of lifeguards makes cold-shock and drowning hazards real concerns; flotation devices and accompaniment are advisable. In winter the frozen surface makes open-water swimming impractical and dangerous. Water quality can vary with season and runoff, so checking local conditions before entering is prudent.
