*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lake Pielinen, located in North Karelia in eastern Finland, is one of the country’s largest and most scenic lakes. Surrounded by forested hills and national parks such as Koli, it is known for its clean, deep waters and natural beauty. Because of its size and depth, Pielinen warms relatively slowly in early summer but retains heat well into autumn. In spring, after the ice melts in May, the surface temperature is around 4–7 °C (39–45 °F). During early summer, it rises to 13–16 °C (55–61 °F), and in July, the warmest month, it typically reaches 18–21 °C (64–70 °F). In shallow bays, temperatures can briefly reach 22–23 °C (72–73 °F). By September, the water cools below 10 °C (50 °F), and the lake freezes again by late November.
Swimming in Lake Pielinen is allowed and very popular in summer. The water is clear and suitable for bathing, with several public beaches near Lieksa and Nurmes offering safe access. While the lake’s open stretches can feel cool due to wind and depth, sheltered shores are pleasant for swimming and recreation. The combination of fresh water, natural surroundings, and clean air makes Pielinen an attractive destination for summer swimming in eastern Finland.
