** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Potato Lake in Minnesota experiences the same seasonal swings common to inland lakes in the region. In spring the water typically runs cool as the lake mixes and warms, often about 40–60°F (4–15°C). Midsummer brings the warmest surface temperatures, generally in the range of 68–78°F (20–26°C) on warm sunny days, though shallower bays can be warmer and deeper water remains cooler. In autumn surface temperatures fall back toward roughly 45–65°F (7–18°C) as the lake cools and stratification breaks down. During winter the lake usually freezes; surface ice is at or below about 32°F (0°C) and water beneath the ice stays near freezing, roughly 32–39°F (0–4°C).
Swimming on Potato Lake is typically possible and common during the warmer months where public access or private shorelines provide safe entry. Local rules, posted advisories and water‑quality notices should be checked before entering; blooms of blue‑green algae, boat traffic, low visibility and cold-water shock can limit safe swimming even in summer. Ice cover in winter generally makes open‑water swimming unsafe except for organized, well‑prepared events, because hypothermia and unstable ice present serious hazards.
