** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Shell Lake in northwestern Minnesota follows the seasonal pattern typical of shallow-to-moderate lakes in the region. In spring surface temperatures commonly range from about 40–60°F (4–16°C) as the lake cools from winter and then warms; summer surface readings typically sit between 68–78°F (20–26°C), with occasional days pushing into the low 80s°F (27–28°C) on warm spells. By early fall the water usually cools back toward 40–60°F (4–15°C), and in winter the surface approaches freezing around 32°F (0°C) and the lake often develops ice cover. Deeper or shaded areas stay cooler than surface measurements, and short-term weather variations can move those numbers up or down.
Swimming is generally allowed at Shell Lake during the open-water months because summer temperatures reach comfortable ranges and public beaches and access points are used for recreation. However, swimmers should observe posted advisories, because water quality, algae blooms, currents near inlets/outlets, or sudden temperature changes can affect safety. Winter swimming is not typical because of ice cover and cold-water hazards. As always, use standard precautions: check local conditions, swim where lifeguards or maintained beaches are present, and be mindful of cold shock in cooler shoulder seasons.
