** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Kabekona Lake’s water temperatures follow the typical seasonal pattern of northern Minnesota lakes, tending to be cool even in summer. During winter the lake surface drops to near freezing, around 32°F (0°C) under ice cover. Spring thaw brings surface temperatures up into the mid-30s to mid-50s °F (2–13°C) as the water mixes. In summer, surface readings commonly range from about 60–75°F (16–24°C), though shallow bays can warm a bit higher on hot, calm days. By autumn the surface cools back toward the 45–60°F (7–16°C) range as air temperatures fall. Kabekona’s generally clear water and local hydrogeology can keep deeper layers cooler than surface readings indicate, so overall temperatures can feel brisk compared with more shallow, nutrient-rich lakes.
Swimming is generally allowed where public access or private permission exists, and many people swim in the warmer summer months when surface temps reach the comfortable range noted above. Restrictions are typically limited to private property boundaries or specific local regulations rather than the lake itself; however, safety and ecological concerns influence use. Cold water, sudden temperature changes, and ice cover in winter make swimming unsafe outside of supervised or specially prepared ice-swimming events, and visitors should choose designated access points and exercise usual precautions such as swimming with a companion and wearing a life jacket if conditions warrant.
