** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lake Plantagenet’s surface waters follow the familiar seasonal pattern of northern Minnesota lakes. After ice-out in spring the lake warms from near freezing to roughly 34–60°F (1–16°C) as the season progresses. In summer the shallow, sun-warmed surface commonly reaches about 65–78°F (18–26°C), though on hot afternoons sheltered bays can climb a few degrees higher. By early fall surface temperatures drop back into the 50–60°F (10–16°C) range before cooling to near 32°F (0°C) and re-freezing in winter. Deeper water remains substantially colder year-round; thermocline development in summer means bottom temperatures may stay in the 40s–50s°F (4–12°C) even when the surface is comfortable.
Swimming at Lake Plantagenet is routinely possible and is most popular in summer when surface temperatures are warm enough for comfortable bathing. There is no blanket prohibition on swimming, but access, safety, and water quality can vary by shoreline and season. Colder mid-season water, deep sudden drop-offs, and the risk of hypothermia make swimming outside the warm months inadvisable, and winter swimming is unsafe except under controlled, expert conditions. Visitors should check local public health advisories for algal blooms, observe posted rules at public accesses, and take standard water-safety precautions since many areas lack lifeguards.
