** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Big Sand Lake typically follows the seasonal pattern of northern Minnesota lakes. In winter the surface is at or below freezing, around 32°F (0°C) with ice cover common; below the ice, deeper water remains near the temperature of maximum density at about 39°F (4°C). During spring the surface warms into the 40–55°F range (4–13°C) as ice melts and the lake stratifies. Summer surface temperatures often reach the warmest levels, commonly about 70–78°F (21–26°C) in open water and sometimes higher in shallow, sheltered bays up to about 80°F (27°C) on hot spells. In autumn the lake cools again with surface readings falling to roughly 45–60°F (7–16°C) as turnover begins.
Swimming is generally possible during the ice‑free months when water temperatures rise and public access points or beaches are open; local rules, private shoreline ownership, and posted advisories determine where it is permitted. Swimming is not appropriate when the lake is frozen or when authorities post warnings for water quality, harmful algal blooms, or unsafe conditions. Even in summer, water under about 70°F (21°C) can feel chilly and increase the risk of cold shock, so swimmers should use caution, swim with companions, and heed local signage and seasonal lifeguard availability.
