** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
#Greater Manchester
Piethorne Reservoir in Greater Manchester sits high on moorland and its water remains cool year-round. Typical winter surface temperatures range from about 0–6 °C (32–43 °F), spring waters warm to roughly 6–12 °C (43–54 °F), and summer surface readings are commonly 12–18 °C (54–64 °F), occasionally reaching near 20 °C (68 °F) during heatwaves. Even in summer the water can feel very cold because of depth and shaded conditions, and temperatures drop quickly after extended cool weather.
Swimming is generally not permitted or actively discouraged at Piethorne because reservoirs are working water supplies and present safety hazards: sudden cold shock, hidden debris, undercurrents and limited lifeguard cover. Wild swimming does occur at sites around Greater Manchester, but at Piethorne visitors should follow landowner and water company guidance. The valley remains popular for walking, cycling, birdwatching and reservoir-circuit hikes, with moorland scenery and well-used footpaths connecting to other nearby reservoirs and villages for refreshments.
