** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
#Greater Manchester
Blackstone Edge Reservoir sits high on the Pennine fringe above Rochdale, so its water stays relatively cold year-round. Typical surface temperatures range from about 1–6 °C (34–43 °F) in winter, rising to roughly 4–12 °C (39–54 °F) in spring. In summer the reservoir may reach 12–18 °C (54–64 °F) on warmer spells, while autumn generally cools back to roughly 6–12 °C (43–54 °F). Wind, depth and rainfall can all cause rapid changes in temperature, and the upland location means even summer swims can feel brisk.
Swimming at Blackstone Edge is not actively promoted and may be restricted by the landowner or water company; there are no lifeguards and submerged hazards, cold-water shock risk and variable water quality make it potentially hazardous. Some experienced wild swimmers do visit, but local signage and permissions should be checked and caution taken. For alternatives and other activities, the gritstone ridge of Blackstone Edge offers walking and scrambling, nearby Pennine moorland provides wildlife and views, and Hollingworth Lake and the Rochdale Canal are popular for more managed water-based recreation.
