Scammonden Reservoir sits high on the Pennine fringe and the water is typically cool year‑round. Surface temperatures commonly range from around 4–6 °C (39–43 °F) in midwinter, rising to about 12–18 °C (54–64 °F) in the warmest weeks of summer; spring and autumn usually see intermediate values of roughly 6–12 °C (43–54 °F). Actual temperatures vary with depth, wind and recent weather, and deeper water remains noticeably colder than the surface. Because of these low temperatures, swimmers face a real risk of cold‑water shock and rapid onset of hypothermia.
There are no designated bathing areas at Scammonden and swimming is generally discouraged by authorities and the reservoir owner because of safety hazards, hidden currents, submerged structures and water‑quality and access controls. Many visitors instead enjoy the dam and reservoir walks, panoramic views from the moorland, and nearby amenities in Huddersfield and surrounding Pennine walking routes. These attractions make Scammonden popular for hiking, birdwatching and countryside photography rather than recreational swimming.
