Watergrove Reservoir, near Littleborough in Greater Manchester, is a cool upland reservoir whose surface temperatures remain low compared with coastal waters. Seasonal ranges typically run from around 3–8 °C (37–46 °F) in winter, rising to roughly 12–20 °C (54–68 °F) in summer, with spring and autumn sitting in between at about 6–14 °C (43–57 °F) and 6–12 °C (43–54 °F) respectively. Even at the warmest times the water can feel chilly because of depth, wind exposure and cold inflow from surrounding moorland.
Swimming in the reservoir is generally not permitted or is strongly discouraged for safety and water-quality reasons; owners and local authorities cite hazards such as cold-water shock, submerged structures, steep banks and the importance of protecting the public water supply. Despite this, some experienced wild swimmers occasionally enter at their own risk. The site is popular for walking, birdwatching and angling with permitted access, and nearby attractions include Hollingworth Lake Country Park, Healey Dell Nature Reserve and extensive Pennine moorland walks that appeal to visitors year-round.
