Pepacton Reservoir in the Catskills is a deep, clear drinking-water impoundment whose temperatures vary with season and depth. In spring the surface typically ranges from about 40–55°F (4–13°C) as snowmelt and cool air keep waters cold; by summer the surface often warms to roughly 60–75°F (15–24°C) on warm days, while deeper layers remain much cooler, frequently holding near 40–50°F (4–10°C) because of thermal stratification. In autumn surface temperatures usually fall back through the 50–60°F (10–16°C) range as air cools, and in winter the reservoir approaches freezing at the surface—around 32°F (0°C) when ice forms—while deeper water stays above freezing but cold.
Swimming in Pepacton Reservoir is not permitted because it is part of New York City’s upstate water supply system and is managed to protect water quality and public health. Restrictions are enforced to minimize contamination risks, limit shoreline disturbance, and reduce safety hazards associated with cold, deep water and limited access for rescue. Recreational activities such as certain fishing and regulated boating may be allowed under local rules and permits, but entering the water for swimming is prohibited to ensure the integrity of the drinking-water source.
