*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
The Ashokan Reservoir experiences typical northeasterly reservoir temperatures that vary noticeably by season. In winter the surface can be at or very near freezing, around 32°F (0°C), with deeper water remaining close to 39°F (4°C). During spring surface temperatures commonly climb from roughly 34–55°F (1–13°C) as snowmelt and cool air moderate, while summer brings the warmest conditions with surface readings often in the 60–75°F (16–24°C) range and occasionally reaching the upper 70s to about 80°F (25–27°C) on particularly hot, shallow bays. In autumn the surface cools back toward 50–60°F (10–16°C) and the reservoir typically re-stratifies as air temperatures drop.
Swimming in the East Basin is not permitted because the Ashokan Reservoir is part of New York City’s protected watershed and sources of municipal drinking water are subject to strict access and contamination controls. Restrictions are enforced to safeguard water quality and reservoir infrastructure, and there are limited shoreline facilities and no lifeguards, which would increase risk. In addition to regulatory prohibitions, cold deep water, submerged structures, and strong undercurrents make unsupervised immersion hazardous even in warmer months, so recreational bathing is discouraged and subject to enforcement.
