** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Neversink Reservoir, part of New York City’s Catskill water supply system, typically shows a wide seasonal range in surface temperatures. In spring the surface often runs roughly 40–60°F (4–16°C) as the water warms; by summer surface readings commonly reach about 68–75°F (20–24°C) on warm days, though cool breezes and depth mean temperatures can be lower. Thermal stratification develops in summer, so deeper water can remain much colder — often in the 40–50°F (4–10°C) range — and in fall the surface cools back toward roughly 45–60°F (7–16°C). In winter the reservoir approaches freezing at the surface, around 32–39°F (0–4°C), and may ice over in sustained cold spells.
Swimming in Neversink Reservoir is not permitted because it is part of the municipal drinking-water supply and protections are intended to preserve water quality and public health. The New York City Department of Environmental Protection restricts direct-contact recreation in many watershed reservoirs to minimize contamination, and there are also safety concerns such as cold-water shock, sudden depth changes, and lack of lifeguard supervision. Visitors can appreciate the reservoir from designated shoreline areas and nearby trails, but organized swimming should be assumed prohibited.
