** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lake Wallenpaupack’s surface water temperatures vary seasonally and with depth. In spring the lake commonly runs cool, roughly 45–65°F (7–18°C) as runoff and chilled air keep the surface cool. Summer brings the warmest conditions, with surface temperatures typically around 70–80°F (21–27°C) on sunny days, though deeper water remains much colder. Early fall sees a steady decline to about 55–70°F (13–21°C) as air temperatures fall and the lake begins to mix. In winter the surface can approach freezing, often 32–40°F (0–4°C) where ice forms or slush is present; open water near the dam or inlets can stay slightly warmer. Because Wallenpaupack is a deep reservoir, thermal stratification means swimmers can encounter sharp temperature changes with depth even in summer.
Swimming is permitted at many of the lake’s public access points and private beaches, and people commonly swim during the warm months when surface temperatures are comfortable. However, much of the shoreline is private or used for boating, and there are areas without lifeguards or formal supervision, so swimming is generally at your own risk. Boat traffic, sudden drop-offs, cold deeper water, and changing weather are the main reasons caution and awareness of local rules are recommended before entering the water.
