*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Otsego Lake’s water temperature varies substantially through the year because it is a relatively deep, upstate New York lake exposed to seasonal weather. In spring the surface can be quite cold, often in the mid-30s to mid-50s °F (about 2–13 °C) as the lake comes out of winter. Summer brings the warmest water, typically ranging from the mid-60s to mid-70s °F (roughly 18–24 °C), with occasional warm spells pushing surface readings into the upper 70s °F (around 26 °C). During autumn the surface begins cooling again, generally falling into the mid-40s to around 60 °F range (about 7–16 °C). In winter the lake frequently approaches freezing (32 °F, 0 °C) and can form shore ice or more extensive ice cover in cold years.
Swimming in and around Otsego Lake is generally permitted and the lake is used recreationally, but practical access and comfort depend on season, designated swim areas, and local rules. Most people swim in summer when surface temperatures are warmest; spring and fall waters are often uncomfortably cold and carry a higher risk of cold-water shock or hypothermia. Local authorities and property owners may post advisories for water quality or harmful algal blooms, and some spots have lifeguards or formal beaches while others are private, so checking current conditions and posted regulations before entering the water is advisable.
