Mount Storm Lake is a man-made reservoir used primarily as a cooling pond for the adjacent power plant, and its water temperatures reflect both seasonal climate and industrial thermal discharge. In winter the lake commonly cools to roughly 33–45°F (1–7°C). Spring warms into the mid ranges, about 45–65°F (7–18°C). Summer surface temperatures are typically the warmest, often 70–85°F (21–29°C) across much of the basin, and in areas near the plant’s discharge can reach into the upper 80s or low 90s°F (30–33°C) at times. In autumn surface readings usually fall back to about 50–70°F (10–21°C) as air temperatures decline. Temperatures can vary by depth and location, with cooler, deeper water beneath warmer surface layers and localized thermal plumes near outflow structures.
Swimming at Mount Storm Lake is generally not permitted or recommended because the reservoir functions as an industrial cooling pond.
