** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Cheat Lake is a reservoir on the Cheat River near Morgantown, West Virginia, and its surface water temperature varies with season, weather and depth. In winter the lake commonly approaches near-freezing conditions, roughly 32–40°F (0–4°C). Spring temperatures typically rise into the mid‑40s to mid‑60s °F (7–18°C) as runoff and air temperatures increase. By summer, surface readings often reach the 70s to low 80s °F (21–28°C) in sheltered shallows on warm afternoons, while deeper channels remain noticeably cooler. In autumn the lake cools back into the 50s–70s °F (10–21°C) as air temperatures drop and stratification breaks down.
Swimming at Cheat Lake is possible and commonly practiced from public access points, private docks and shoreline areas, but it is generally unguarded and unmanaged. There are no widespread lifeguarded beaches on the reservoir, so swimmers should treat the water as open‑water swimming: be aware of cold shocks from colder depths, boat traffic, changing currents near the dam and inlets, and occasional water‑quality advisories that may be issued after heavy rain or upstream events. Local rules or posted signs may restrict entry at particular sites, so checking conditions and using personal flotation devices for inexperienced swimmers is recommended.
