** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Stonewall Jackson Lake, a Corps-managed reservoir in central West Virginia, experiences marked seasonal changes in surface water temperature. In winter the lake commonly hovers just above freezing, roughly 34–45°F (1–7°C). Spring warming brings surface temperatures into the mid‑40s to mid‑60s °F (7–18°C) as the lake stratifies. Peak summer surface temperatures typically range from about 70–80°F (21–27°C), with shallow bays occasionally warming a few degrees higher on hot, calm days. In autumn the surface cools again, generally falling back into the 50–65°F (10–18°C) band as the lake mixes. These are approximate typical ranges; actual temperatures vary with weather, depth, and location within the reservoir.
Swimming is allowed in designated recreation areas such as the state park and resort-managed beach facilities, but open‑water swimming across much of the Corps property is discouraged or subject to local restrictions. The reasons are safety-related: the reservoir supports boat traffic and has variable depths, submerged structure, and often no lifeguards, which increase hazards for swimmers. Visitors intending to swim should use lifeguarded or clearly marked beach areas where available, check current local rules and advisories, and be mindful that deeper or shaded water layers may be considerably colder than the surface.
