** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lake Frederick, a man-made reservoir in northern Virginia, typically shows a clear seasonal cycle in surface water temperature. In winter months the surface often hovers near freezing to the mid-40s °F (about 1–7 °C). Spring brings steady warming, with surface readings commonly in the mid-40s to mid-60s °F (7–18 °C) as air temperatures rise and stratification begins. During summer the shallow bays and surface layer can reach the 70s to mid-80s °F (21–29 °C), occasionally climbing toward 86 °F (30 °C) during heat waves. In fall the lake cools again, with surface temperatures generally falling through the 60s into the 50s °F (10–15 °C) as turnover approaches. Actual temperatures vary by depth, sun exposure and wind; deeper waters stay colder year-round and shallow coves heat up fastest.
Swimming at Lake Frederick is limited and generally discouraged because there is no designated public swim beach, no lifeguards, and routine water-quality monitoring for recreational swimming is not provided. The lake is primarily managed for boating, angling and wildlife, and local regulations or signage may prohibit or advise against wading and swimming for safety reasons and concern about bacterial contamination or harmful algal blooms after heavy rains. Visitors should check posted rules and conditions before entering the water and treat summer surface temperatures as comfortable only with appropriate precautions.
