Youghiogheny River Lake in western Maryland tends to run cooler than many lowland lakes because it is a mountain reservoir fed by cold streams and subject to depth-driven temperature stratification. Surface temperatures in summer commonly reach about 68–75°F (20–24°C) on warm days, while spring and early summer are much cooler, often 45–60°F (7–15°C). In fall the surface typically falls back into the 45–60°F (7–15°C) range, and winter temperatures can approach freezing, roughly 32–40°F (0–4°C) at the surface. Deeper water remains substantially colder year-round, so even when the surface is pleasant, immersion to deeper layers brings a rapid drop in temperature.
Swimming is not provided with lifeguard supervision at the lake and, in practice, is a discretionary activity undertaken at visitors’ own risk rather than a formally managed beach operation. Recreational swimming is discouraged in many spots because of cold water shock and hypothermia risk, sudden changes in water level from dam releases, underwater drop-offs and debris, and boat traffic in popular areas. Some parts of the shoreline are used for picnicking and access but lack designated swim beaches, so caution and local signage should guide whether a given area is suitable for swimming.
