** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lums Pond is Delaware’s largest freshwater pond and its surface temperature follows the region’s seasonal cycle. In summer, surface water typically warms to roughly 70–85°F (21–29°C), with shallow bays sometimes reaching the upper end of that range on hot, calm days. Spring temperatures often run from about 40–60°F (4–16°C) as the pond slowly warms after thaw, while autumn sees a gradual decline back toward 50–70°F (10–21°C). In winter the pond can approach freezing at the surface, commonly around 32–40°F (0–4°C), especially after prolonged cold spells. Actual temperatures vary by depth, wind, cloud cover and recent weather; shallow areas heat and cool faster than deeper channels.
Swimming at Lums Pond is not offered as a lifeguarded, designated beach and is generally not permitted or is strongly discouraged under park rules. The main reasons are public-safety concerns: there are no staffed swim patrols, water quality and clarity can be variable, submerged vegetation and drop-offs create hazards, and the pond is used extensively for boating and fishing. Visitors seeking water recreation are encouraged to use non‑swimming activities such as paddling, fishing or permitted boating where park rules and safety equipment apply.
