*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lough Leane, the largest of the Killarney Lakes in County Kerry, lies within Killarney National Park and is surrounded by forested mountains and historic estates. The water is cool year-round, with winter temperatures averaging around 5–7°C (41–45°F) and summer temperatures usually reaching 14–17°C (57–63°F). On rare warm days, shallow bays can rise to about 18–19°C (64–66°F), but the deeper sections stay noticeably cooler. These mild temperatures reflect the region’s maritime climate, where Atlantic breezes and frequent rain keep the lake fresh but never warm. The most comfortable time for swimming is typically between June and early September, when both the water and air are at their mildest.
Swimming is allowed in Lough Leane, and many visitors enjoy brief dips or open-water swimming from designated spots such as Ross Castle and Muckross Lake’s connecting areas. However, swimmers should be cautious of sudden depth changes, cool undercurrents, and boat traffic. Wetsuits are common for longer swims. Beyond the water, the area offers numerous attractions including Ross Castle, the scenic Gap of Dunloe, and walking or cycling trails through Killarney National Park. Together they create a combination of natural beauty and outdoor activity that makes Lough Leane a distinctive and memorable destination in southwest Ireland.
