*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lough Derg, one of Ireland's largest lakes, offers a freshwater experience where water temperatures fluctuate significantly throughout the year. During the winter and early spring months, the water can be quite cold, typically ranging from about 6∘C to 10∘C (43∘F to 50∘F). As the summer progresses, the surface water warms considerably, peaking in the range of approximately 14∘C to 17∘C (57∘F to 63∘F), though deeper sections may remain cooler.
Swimming is actively encouraged and widely available, with the lake being a popular destination for water sports. Crucially, Lough Derg features multiple designated bathing areas, including Blue Flag beaches at Mountshannon, Ballycuggeran, and Portumna. These spots are officially recognised for their high water quality and safety, often offering lifeguard services during the peak summer bathing season, allowing visitors to swim freely and safely. Beyond swimming, the area boasts attractions like the historic monastic settlement on Holy Island (Inis Cealtra) and the picturesque towns of Killaloe and Ballina, which act as gateways to the lake and the wider Shannon region.
