*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lough Cutra, located near Gort in County Galway, is a private lake surrounded by wooded parkland and the historic Lough Cutra Castle. Its sheltered position and moderate depth give it relatively stable but cool water temperatures throughout the year. In winter, the water averages around 4–7°C (39–45°F), while in summer it typically warms to 14–17°C (57–63°F). During calm, sunny weather, shallower areas near the edges may briefly reach 18°C (64°F), though most of the lake remains fresh and cool. These conditions make swimming most comfortable from late June to early September, when both air and water temperatures are mildest.
Swimming in Lough Cutra is allowed with permission, most notably during organized events such as triathlons and open-water swims hosted near the castle. Outside of such occasions, access may be limited due to the lake’s private ownership, but the water quality is generally good and the setting is calm and scenic. The surrounding estate provides opportunities for walking, cycling, and birdwatching, and the nearby town of Gort offers amenities and access to Coole Park, a nature reserve known for its literary and historical connections. Lough Cutra’s tranquil landscape and clear water create a peaceful environment typical of the natural beauty found in western Ireland.
