Lough Rea, a large limestone lake in County Galway, is a popular local spot that offers comparatively mild water temperatures for Irish standards, making it an excellent location for lake swimming. In the deepest parts of winter, the water temperature typically ranges from 8∘C to 10∘C (46∘F to 50∘F). By mid-summer, the shallower bathing area warms up considerably, often reaching a pleasant 16∘C to 19∘C (61∘F to 66∘F).
The Long Point bathing area on Lough Rea is officially designated and safe for swimming, evidenced by its Blue Flag status, an international award for excellent water quality and amenities. Swimming is actively encouraged, with the facility offering changing rooms, showers, and a seasonal lifeguard service during the busy summer months.
