Caragh Lake, located in County Kerry near Glenbeigh, lies within a scenic valley framed by the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks and Seefin Mountains. Fed by clear mountain streams, the lake remains cool throughout the year. In winter, water temperatures usually range between 4–7°C (39–45°F), while in summer they rise to around 14–17°C (57–63°F). On warm, calm days in July or August, sheltered bays may briefly reach 18°C (64°F), though the deeper parts stay much colder. The surrounding uplands and the lake’s outflow into the River Caragh keep the water fresh and clean, making the summer months the most comfortable for swimming or other water activities.
Swimming is allowed in Caragh Lake, though it is best suited to confident swimmers because the lake can be deep and temperatures drop quickly below the surface. Wetsuits are commonly used, especially outside midsummer, and calm days are preferred for safety.
