Lough Allua, a picturesque ribbon lake in County Cork that forms part of the River Lee, is primarily known as an excellent spot for coarse fishing. Due to the lack of official monitoring and its inland location, precise seasonal water temperature figures are difficult to obtain. However, as a large, deep freshwater lake in the south-west of Ireland, its waters are typically very cool, even in summer. Estimated temperatures would likely range from a winter low of around 4∘C to 8∘C (39∘F to 46∘F), peaking in summer at approximately 14∘C to 18∘C (57∘F to 64∘F).
Swimming is generally allowed in Lough Allua, as public access to open water is rarely restricted in Ireland. The lake is, in fact, the location for an annual open water charity swim event, which confirms its suitability for bathing. Nevertheless, as there are no designated bathing areas, no lifeguards, and the water is deep in sections, caution and local knowledge are essential for safety. The lough is situated close to the Gougane Barra Forest Park, a beautiful area famous for its scenic drive, walking trails, and the tiny St. Finbarr’s Oratory on an island in a nearby lake.
