⚠️ As of today, the minimum water temperature ranges from 54°F (12°C) to 60°F (15°C). The water is significantly warmer, and swimming becomes possible for most people. However, caution may still be required for prolonged stays in the water, as extended exposure can cause discomfort. ** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years

*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast

Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.

Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information

The stunning Glendalough Lakes, nestled within the glacial valley of the Wicklow Mountains National Park, are known for their cool, dark waters. As deep mountain lakes, they experience significant seasonal temperature variations. During the winter months, the water can be extremely cold, dropping to around 5∘C to 7∘C (41∘F to 45∘F). In the height of summer, the surface water of the Upper Lake can warm up, though remaining refreshing, typically reaching 10∘C to 14∘C (50∘F to 57∘F).

Wild swimming is permitted in the Glendalough lakes, particularly at the Upper Lake, which is a popular spot in summer. However, visitors are strongly cautioned that these are unsupervised mountain waters with no lifeguards, sudden and dramatic depth changes, and persistently cold temperatures below the surface. Safety warnings emphasize the need for close supervision, especially for children. Beyond the lakes, the area is famed for the sixth-century Monastic City established by St. Kevin, featuring the iconic Round Tower, and an extensive network of challenging hiking trails, including the highly popular Spinc Loop.
