*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lough Acoose, located near Glencar in County Kerry, is a small freshwater lake set against the dramatic backdrop of the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks. Fed by mountain streams and rainfall, the lake remains cool throughout the year. In winter, surface temperatures typically range between 4–6°C (39–43°F), while in summer they rise to about 14–17°C (57–63°F). On calm, sunny days in July and August, the shallows may briefly reach 18°C (64°F), but the water remains brisk due to its altitude and continuous inflow from colder upland sources. The clarity and freshness of the lake make it inviting during the warmer months, though swimmers can expect a cool, invigorating experience even in midsummer.
Swimming is allowed in Lough Acoose, and the lake is occasionally used for training by triathletes and open-water enthusiasts because of its clean water and scenic location. However, swimmers should be mindful of the cold temperatures, sudden depth changes, and the exposed setting where weather can change quickly. Wetsuits are recommended outside peak summer. Beyond swimming, Lough Acoose is a popular spot for fishing, kayaking, and nature photography. Nearby attractions include the Gap of Dunloe, Carrauntoohil—the highest mountain in Ireland—and the beautiful valleys of Glencar and the Black Valley, all offering excellent opportunities for hiking and exploration.
