Lough Derravaragh, located in County Westmeath in central Ireland, is a long, shallow lake shaped by glacial activity and surrounded by rolling farmland. Its water temperature follows the seasonal rhythm of the Irish Midlands, averaging around 4–6°C (39–43°F) in winter and reaching between 15–18°C (59–64°F) in summer. On particularly warm, calm days, the upper layer can briefly rise to 19°C (66°F), but deeper sections remain noticeably cooler. The lake’s open exposure means breezes can quickly lower surface warmth, so the best time for swimming is from late May to early September, when the water and weather are at their mildest.
Swimming is allowed in Lough Derravaragh, and it is a popular choice for both local swimmers and families on warm days. The shallow areas near Donore and Crookedwood provide easier and safer access, though swimmers should remain cautious of sudden depth changes and weather shifts. Wetsuits are commonly used outside midsummer.
