** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years

*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast

Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.

Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information

Lough Derravaragh, located in County Westmeath in central Ireland, is a long, shallow lake shaped by glacial activity and surrounded by rolling farmland. Its water temperature follows the seasonal rhythm of the Irish Midlands, averaging around 4–6°C (39–43°F) in winter and reaching between 15–18°C (59–64°F) in summer. On particularly warm, calm days, the upper layer can briefly rise to 19°C (66°F), but deeper sections remain noticeably cooler. The lake’s open exposure means breezes can quickly lower surface warmth, so the best time for swimming is from late May to early September, when the water and weather are at their mildest.

Swimming is allowed in Lough Derravaragh, and it is a popular choice for both local swimmers and families on warm days. The shallow areas near Donore and Crookedwood provide easier and safer access, though swimmers should remain cautious of sudden depth changes and weather shifts. Wetsuits are commonly used outside midsummer. The lake is also well known for boating and trout fishing, and it holds a special place in Irish folklore as the legendary setting of the “Children of Lir.” Nearby attractions include the historic town of Mullingar and the scenic Fore Abbey ruins, making the area rich in both nature and heritage.
