*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lough Owel, located just north of Mullingar in County Westmeath, is a deep, spring-fed lake known for its clear blue water and excellent water quality. Its temperature changes gradually with the Irish seasons, averaging around 4–6°C (39–43°F) in winter and rising to about 15–18°C (59–64°F) in summer. On warm, calm days, the surface temperature may briefly reach 19°C (66°F), but cooler layers remain below due to the lake’s depth. The clean, refreshing water makes it inviting during the warmer months, with late June through early September offering the most comfortable swimming conditions. Outside this period, the chill can be quite intense, so cold-water swimmers usually limit their time in the water.
Swimming is allowed and popular in designated areas such as Portnashangan and Belvedere House, where the water is monitored and access is safe. The lake’s clarity and relatively calm surface make it suitable for both casual bathing and open-water swimming, though wetsuits are often recommended. Beyond swimming, Lough Owel is a favourite destination for boating and trout fishing, surrounded by gentle countryside ideal for walks. Nearby attractions include the historic town of Mullingar, Belvedere House and Gardens, and the scenic Royal Canal, all adding to the lake’s peaceful charm.
