*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lough Forbes, located on the River Shannon between Counties Longford and Roscommon, is a broad and tranquil lake surrounded by wetlands and quiet farmland. Its water temperature reflects the temperate inland climate of central Ireland, with readings typically around 4–6°C (39–43°F) in winter and rising to about 15–18°C (59–64°F) in summer. On warm, still days, shallow bays and sheltered coves may reach 19°C (66°F), though most of the lake remains cooler, especially in deeper areas. Because the water warms slowly through spring, the most comfortable swimming conditions occur between June and early September, when air temperatures are also mild and stable.
Swimming is allowed in Lough Forbes, but it is not a heavily developed recreational area, so local knowledge and care are important. The lake’s connection to the Shannon system means that gentle currents may be present, and swimmers are advised to stay close to shore and avoid areas of boat traffic. The clear, calm stretches near Lanesborough or Tarmonbarry offer safer access points for short swims. Lough Forbes is also known for its wildlife and fishing, and the surrounding area provides walking and boating opportunities. Nearby, the heritage town of Longford and the scenic Shannon Blueway trails add to the region’s quiet outdoor appeal.
